We met Shad & Melissa while we were in language school in Ouagadougou. They live here in Niamey and have one of the coolest jobs in the whole region –- ethnomusicologists for the Zerma people. Basically, they are responsible for helping Zerma believers develop scripture-based worship music in their own language using indigenous instruments and music styles. How cool is that?!
The Blacks served us attaya, which is strong, sweet tea brewed over coals and served in three rounds. Everyone drinks out of the same tiny glass cups. Many West Africans, especially men, will sit around for hours, talking and drinking round after round of attaya.
Shad also convinced Deron to try on one of his African outfits, which is called a boubou (boo-boo). I have as of yet been unsuccessful in getting Deron to purchase African clothes, but maybe he’ll be more inclined now that he sees how dashing he looks in this little number!
Tomorrow morning we head out to the villages until Saturday afternoon/evening. Please pray that we'll stay healthy -- we've been having some health problems, probably a combination of heat and quirky reactions to food we've eaten. We don't want to feel bad on the road so we'd appreciate prayers. We also ask for prayers for traveling safety. Lots of vehicles have been breaking down recently, including the one we were orignally supposed to drive out. We will be traveling with a couple of verteran missionaries so if something happens at least we won't be totally stranded! We appreciate you all!
