Here's a little known fact about Cote d'Ivoire: it is home to the tallest church building in the world! We got to see it last week when we drove with some of our co-workers about 3 hours north to Yamoussoukro, the capital city.
This cathedral, which opened in 1991, is amazingly beautiful but also kind of incongruous with its surroundings. It rises up out of the middle of nowhere, dominating the skyline of the little town that surrounds it.Although the architecture is similar to any ancient European cathedral, this basilica is definitely African: check out the cows moseying by!

Your pictures are always so good. I showed your flikr pictures to one of our geography teachers, and she loved them! You capture a lot of interesting shots and share information that is not in the geography books.

It's Catholic. The name is Basilica Notre Dame-de-la-Paix (Our Lady of Peace).
