We are back in Mississippi. Today we spent the majority of the day repacking the bags we're taking to Africa. As we previously shared, we had to repack the suitcases we'd already closed up since the airlines changed the weight limit from 70 lb. to 50 lb. Fortunately most of the decisions weren't too difficult to make.
What are we leaving behind? An afghan that was given to us as a wedding gift (a comfort item -- but probably not necessary in Africa), two massive bottles of liquid hand soap (I hope we can buy it over there, although I'm not holding my breath), giftwrapping supplies, party decorations, lots of books, and older clothes and shoes. What are we keeping? Clothes, medicines, toolbox, games, most of the food, DVDs (I think we could open our own Blockbuster franchise), craft supplies, the most special photo albums/frames, and the most important books.
Although it's hard to "give up" some of our stuff, we keep reminding ourselves that it is, afterall, just stuff.
On the bright side, Deron has a wedding ring again. His mom gave us his late grandfather's ring, which was yellow gold, so we had it resized and coated in white gold (no more platinum for Mr. Snowball Fight). The good news is: it looks great. The bad news is: apparently we'll need to get it recoated every year or so, because natural acids in the skin will wear off the white gold. Why didn't they tell us this BEFORE we handed over the ring? Considering how much it will cost to recoat it every year, monetarily we would have been better off purchasing a new ring for him. Oh, well, this one has sentimental value. And the timing was very appropriate -- we picked it up the day before our third wedding anniversary, which was on the 28th.
Only 5 1/2 days till we get on a plane to Africa!

Congrats on the new ring, god thing is you won't have to worry about having snowball fights in Africa...(well, unless you go up in the mountains, but whatever...)
